2023 Winners

Allotrope Partners

Allotrope Partners is launching a new type of blended finance vehicle called a Local Utility Project Aggregator, which supports local electric cooperatives in the Philippines to invest in and own renewable energy projects. These cooperatives are nonprofit, membership-based electricity providers that can offer community-driven solutions to unlock renewable energy at scale across the country. Allotrope acts as an aggregator to connect individual cooperatives with project development and financing resources, and has already lined up a pipeline of projects greater than 100MW, including solar farm development, microgrids, solar plus battery storage, and standalone battery-storage solutions.

AT&S (China)

AT&S is a global electronics manufacturing company with two manufacturing sites in China. With little access to renewable energy through the local utility, AT&S China stepped up as an early adopter of a new trial program for interprovincial green electricity transactions. AT&S began sourcing electricity from independent providers that had access to solar resources in West China and the electricity transaction centers, coordinating the transfers through the State Grid. Through the transaction, AT&S secured a total of 300GWh solar power from two provinces for their China manufacturing facilities, demonstrating a new model for sourcing renewable energy in China.

AirTrunk, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, and Microsoft (joint award)

Last November, AirTrunk, a data center specialist in Asia Pacific & Japan, and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Hong Kong’s major power utility, announced a first-of-its-kind renewable energy solution in Hong Kong to match Microsoft’s data center electricity consumption with local renewable energy certificates. In this program, AirTrunk will source hourly RECs from landfill gas through CLP Power Hong Kong Limited to provide renewable energy to match Microsoft’s electricity usage. This is the first of its kind in the APAC region to feature hourly matching and the first REC solution linked to a specific renewable energy project in Hong Kong. It is also the biggest REC agreement for a data center since the launch of CLP’s REC program in 2019.

Jabil

Jabil, one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers, has been demonstrating leadership in renewable energy procurement in Asia by actively sourcing renewable energy for its facilities since 2018. Renewable initiatives include installing onsite solar, engaging in power purchase agreements and purchasing green electricity certificates for the remainder, and investing directly in renewable energy projects. Jabil also engaged a 3rd-party auditor to ensure that the renewable energy sourced from small hydropower meets the standards of the U.S.-based Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI).

Kingwhale Corporation

Kingwhale Corporation is a leading performance textile manufacturer for global brands that are committed to innovation, performance and sustainability. Kingwhale is also a sustainability leader in the textile industry. Kingwhale is the first textile manufacturer to join RE100, pledging to use 100% renewable energy by 2040. The company has completed solar installations in all its Taiwan factories, and continues to invest in renewable energy storage. Kingwhale’s Vietnam factory purchases REC to match 100% of its electricity use. The company is in the process of building a 94MW energy storage facility, and also develops projects in Taiwan to encourage corporations to increase their use of renewable energy.

Meta

As one of the largest energy buyers in the world, Meta’s global operations have been supported by 100% renewable energy since 2020, and now it has a new goal of reaching Net Zero across its value chain by 2030. Meta, a founder member of the Asia Clean Energy Coalition, is also building its first Data Center in Asia, located in Singapore. The company is signing two long-term agreements for the attributes from surplus power generated by approximately 50MW of solar panels on rooftops throughout Singapore for these data centers. Meta is also engaging in the largest contract in Singapore in terms of solar capacity under a virtual power purchase agreement for projects located on the rooftops of residential and government buildings.
